The language of art is a universal one, and Bucharest knows it very well, since the capital of Romania has managed, in recent years, to integrate perfectly into the international cultural landscape. Foreign artists known on the big scenes of the world come regularly to our country to present themselves to an audience that they say is a special one: open to quality shows and eager to access as many cultural events as possible.
One of the scenes where the presence of heavy names in international art is noticeable is that of the National Opera in Bucharest.
If so far we have presented the stories of foreign ballerinas who are part of the permanent team of this institution, today we want to bring in the spotlight those artists who collaborate periodically with the National Opera in Bucharest and who always come with great joy to the Romanian capital. Their presence represents a clear recognition of Bucharest as one of the important cities on the cultural map of the world.

These artists, whether they are singers, filmmakers, scenographers or conductors, feel “at home” in the city that adopts them for certain periods of time. Their feeling of belonging to what is meant by the artistic life of the most important city in Romania is due to the fact that Bucharest allows them to express themselves and to expose themselves in front of a receptive and avid cultural audience.
Filmmakers, conductors, singers
The filmmaker and scenographer Mario De Carlo returns to Bucharest constantly to put on stage different works with great catch to the melomaniacs. In the last two years, he signed the directing for a series of premieres, including “Don Carlo” (2018), “Tosca” (2019), “Trubadur” (2019). Also, this year, he created the scenography for “Peer Gynt and Carmina Burana”.
It can be said that De Carlo is a regular of the National Opera in Bucharest being among the constant guests of this cultural institution.
Mario De Carlo has collaborated over time with titans of the great scenes, both as a filmmaker and as a scenographer. However, when preparing a show for the National Opera in Bucharest he has great emotions. It is fully involved, following step by step the construction of the roles and the staging of the action. It only calms down when he sees the full house and when he feels the appreciation of the public in Bucharest.
A complete artist, Mario De Carlo is not only passionate about filmmaking and scenography. He also has another great love: painting on the easel. In this art he prefers to make portraits. In fact, some of his work has been exhibited at the Tikkun Gallery in Milan.

And the energetic Italian conductor Alberto Veronesi has been present quite often on the scene of the National Opera in Bucharest in the recent years. He has directed shows such as “Nabucco” (November 15th, 2018), “La Boheme” (January 16th, 2019) or “La Traviata” (December 7th, 2019). The next show – “Otello” -, for which he will conduct the Orchestra of the National Opera in Bucharest, is scheduled on February 22nd, 2020.
Throughout his career, Alberto Veronesi has managed to win audiences around the world, standing out because of the special style of running a show.

The melomaniacs familiar with the scene of the National Opera in Bucharest also noticed the mezzo-soprano Ljubica Vranes. The charismatic soloist of the Belgrade Opera delighted the public in Bucharest with her roles in “Nabucco” (show performed on March 15th, 2019), “Don Carlo” (show performed on November 9th, 2019).
And this month, Ljubica Vranes is in Bucharest and will play in “Carmen” on December 15th. The extraordinary carol recital “Carols from around the World” is scheduled the same day.
Bucharest is a city where cultural tourism is beginning to develop a lot. These foreign artists who are exposed to the public in our country then become ambassadors of Romania, making us known all over the world.
In fact, it has been constantly noticed that artistic events organized in Bucharest manage to attract not only spectators from Romania, but also from abroad. An example is the “George Enescu” Festival, a prestigious Romanian musical event, which offers a special glow to the cultural environment in the Romanian capital.
