Bucharest, the capital of plastic surgery

It is no longer a secret that Romania, especially Bucharest, manages to attract a large number of patients who want an improvement in their physical appearance, and for this they choose the surgeon’s scalpel.

Cosmetic surgery is an important branch of medicine, which has undergone a significant development in recent years. Bucharest is among the capitals of the world that have managed to put its name on worldwide map of the medical tourism due to the fact that foreigners choose to solve their dissatisfaction regarding their physical aspect with the help of experts from our country.

However, Bucharest is also the city that concentrates many clinics focused on plastic surgery.

Many believe that between cosmetic and plastic surgery there is the equal sign, but this is not true. The former is focused on improving the physical appearance, while the latter has more of a medical role.

Plastic surgery for children

The public health system includes several clinics focused on plastic surgery. Most of them are concentrated in the Capital.

“Grigore Alexandrescuˮ Emergency Clinical Hospital for Children has one of the most modern departments of this type. The Clinical Department of Plastic Surgery, Reconstructive Microsurgery and Burns deals annually with thousands of cases of very young patients who have medical problems that require the intervention of specialists in plastic surgery. Over 2,000 cases are hospitalised every year in the clinic, and more than 6,000 cases are solved in the outpatient department. Both the emergencies (burns, wounds, crushes, complex injuries) and the chronic pathologies (cleft lip palates, malformations of the limbs, ears, tumors of soft parts, post-traumatic scars etc.) are treated.

Doctors at this hospital can undergo surgery, depending on the condition, even on babies from one or two months old.

Through the kinesiotherapy service available, the clinic also ensures the recovery of patients after certain tragic episodes in their lives. The department led by Dr. Dan Mircea Enescu has 28 beds and has been operating in a new building since 2005.

Treatments for adults

Doctors are involved both in the resolution of emergencies and in cases of chronic pathologies.

Starting with 1995, “Dr. Carol Davila” University Emergency Military Hospital includes a Department for Plastic Surgery – Reconstructive Microsurgery.

The doctors who work in this department provide care in case of severe burns, complex injuries of the extremities, but they also intervene in the surgical pathology of the hand and the oncological diseases of the soft tissues. The department is coordinated by Col. Dr. Bogdan Mihai Marinescu, PhD. The services of the experts in this section are provided to patients from all over the country.

Another unit in the Capital where the plastic surgery benefits from a dedicated department is the University Emergency Hospital Bucharest. The department, focused mainly on reconstructive microsurgery, is coordinated by the Assoc. Prof. Ana Maria Oproiu, PhD and performs complex medical activities. The department has 25 beds and its own operating room.

Reconstructive microsurgery is also performed at the Emergency Clinical Hospital of Bucharest. Furthermore, the medical services provided by this unit also cover breast reconstructions, treatment of malformations, treatment of soft tissue tumours etc.

Patients from all over the country choose Bucharest to be treated.

At the end of 2012, a Department for Plastic Surgery, Aesthetics and Reconstructive Microsurgery was established at “Sf. Ioan” Emergency Clinical Hospital of Bucharest that benefits from an operating room and 25 beds. The team coordinated by Dr. Carmen Giuglea is involved both in the medical-surgical resolution of emergency cases and of the pathology that requires such treatments.

One of the most important medical services provided by this department concerns women who have undergone a mastectomy. Doctors from “Sf. Ioan” Emergency Clinical Hospital of Bucharest operate breast reconstructions, within a national program supported financially by the National Health Insurance Company (CNAS).

The Department of Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery within Colentina Clinical Hospital covers a wide range of specialties. Many chronic cases are treated here. The team of doctors consisting of Dr. Adrian Rebosapca (coordinator of the department), Dr. Bogdan Andreescu and Dr. Ioan Marinescu provide surgical treatments of the face, hand, breast, nose etc. It also offers treatments in cases of varicose ulcers or scars.
